Moth and Butterfly Differences in Biology Import Concepts Must to Know
Question. Difference Between Moth and Butterfly.
Answer:
Butterflies:
- Butterflies belong to the Papilionoidea superfamily and Lepidoptera order. Butterflies are distributed all over the world. Butterflies are active during the day and are usually brightly coloured or strikingly patterned.
- The life cycle of butterflies has four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The larvae and adults of most butterflies feed on plants, often only specific parts of specific types of plants.
Moths:
- Moths belong to a paraphyletic group of insects and belong to the order Lepidoptera. There are approximately 160,000 species of moth and most of them are undetermined. They are mainly nocturnal in nature.
Differentiating Property | Moth | Butterfly |
Antennae | Short and feathery; used for smelling and flying. | Long and thin, round knob at end; used for smelling. |
Feeding Behaviours | No proboscis; survive off of fat stored during the larval stage. | Have a proboscis to suck liquid (nectar) from flowers. |
Wings | Thick, fuzzy coat of scales on its wings. | Thin, smooth coat of scales on its wings. |
Resting posture | Wings usually open. | Usually with wings closed. |
Body Temperature Regulation | Moves wings to warm up. | Uses the sun to warm up. |
Sound Detection | Have ears that can hear sounds. | Do not have ears; cannot hear sounds; use wings to feel vibrations. |
Pupa | Makes a cocoon underground or on the ground. | Makes a chrysalis hanging from a branch or other support. |
Activity period | Active mostly at night; rest during the day. | Active mostly during the day; rest at night. |
Color | Dull colored wings; often brown or gray; help to hide while resting during the day. | Brightly colored wings; can attract mates; help to blend in with flowers; can sometimes warn predators to stay away. |
Mating Selection | Uses scent to select mates. | Uses sight to select mates. |
Anatomy | Moths have a structure called the Frenulum, which join the forewing and hind wing. | Butterflies have no frenulum. |
Behaviours | Moths are nocturnal – active at night. | Butterflies are Diurnal – active at day. |
Pupal Stage | Moths make cocoons from silk. | Butterflies make chrysalis that is hard, smooth and does NOT comprise silk. |
Antenna | Moths have stout and fuzzy antennas with a feathery or comb-like appearance. | Butterflies have long, slender antennas with club-shaped tips. |
Size | Moths are generally smaller compared to butterflies. | Butterflies are generally larger compared to moths. |
Species and Distribution | Moths make up between per cent of order Lepidoptera. | Butterflies only make up between per cent of order Lepidoptera |
