Food Classification and Its Types

Adulterated Food

  • When a food product fails to meet the legal standards, Adulteration is a legal term used for the same.
  • Also, addition of another substance to a food item in order to increase the quantity of the food item in:
    • Raw form
    • Prepared form
  • Some of the items that can be used for adulteration are water or ice, carcasses, or carcasses of animals.

Camping Food

  • This food is often made up of either freeze-dried, precooked, or dehydrated ingredients.
  • Freeze-dried ingredients are often considered superior to dehydrated ingredients.
  • Surplus precooked military Meals, Ready-to-Eat (MREs) are some of the examples.

Diet Food

  • Any food or beverage whose recipe is altered to reduce fat, carbohydrates, to make it part of a weight loss program or diet.
  • Some of the examples are Leafy Greens, Salmon, Boiled Potatoes, Beans and Legumes, etc.

Finger Food

  • This food is to be eaten directly using the hands.

Fresh Food

  • This is the food that has not been preserved and has not spoiled yet.
  • Dairy products are fresh.
  • Some of the other examples are Seafood, Meat, Eggs, etc.

Frozen Food

  • Freezing food slows down decomposition by turning residual moisture into ice.
  • Freezing helps in inhibiting the growth of most bacterial species.
  • Some of the popular freezer foods are Breaded chicken, Ice-cream, Burgers, Carrots, Roast Potatoes, etc.

Functional Food

  • One related to health-promotion or disease prevention.
  • Some of the examples are grains, fruits, vegetables, and nuts, etc.

Healthy Food

  • This food helps to maintain or improve overall health.
  • A healthy diet provides the body with:
    • Fluid
    • Macronutrients
    • Micronutrients
    • Adequate calories
  • Some of the examples are Almonds, Brazil nuts, Oatmeal, Wheat germ, Broccoli, Apples, etc.

Live Food

  • This food is living food for carnivorous or omnivorous animals kept in captivity.
  • It is commonly used as feed for a variety of species of exotic pets and zoo animals.
  • Some of the examples are potato, Salmon, Banana, etc.

Dead Food

Examples are Banana chips, Chicken nuggets, Fish sticks, Fruit snacks, etc.

Medical Food

  • These foods are specially formulated and intended for the dietary management of a disease.
  • Classification categories:
    • Nutritionally complete formulas
    • Nutritionally incomplete formulas
    • Formulas for metabolic disorders
    • Oral rehydration products

Natural Food

Some of the examples are fresh whole fruits, vegetables, whole grains, seeds, nuts, beans, and legumes, etc.

Whole Food

  • Plant foods that are unprocessed and unrefined.
  • These may also be processed and refined as little as possible before being consumed.
  • Some of the examples are whole grains, tubers, legumes, fruits, vegetables, etc.

Seasonal Food

  • These foods have the naturally cooling effect on the body.
  • Some of the examples are watermelon, tomatoes, Cantaloupe, plums, peaches, raspberries, grapefruits, mangoes, etc.

Traditional Food

Examples are meat and poultry, eggs, whole grains, fish, beans, and legumes, etc.
