Here are some entries from personal records. Use the definitions above to decide which of the entries might be from a diary, a journal, a log or a memoir.

Question 1:

Q. Why does Anne provide a brief sketch of her life?

A. Anne believed that a brief sketch of her life would provide the background necessary for the reader to understand her musings. It would tell them her point of view, where she was coming from.

Question 2:

Q. What tells you that Anne loved her grandmother?

A. After her grandmother died Anne still wrote about her in her diary remembering her.

Thinking About the Text

Question 1:

Q. Was Anne right when she said that the world not be interested in the musings of a thirteen-year-old girl?

A. No, Anne could not in fact be more wrong. Her diary published as ‘The Diary of a Young Girl’ was translated from its original Dutch into many languages and went on to become one most widely read books. The book has also be inspired several films, television and theatrical productions, and even an opera.

It is frequently described as the work of a mature mind providing insight into the life under Nazi occupation.

Question 2:

Q. There are some examples of diary or journal entries in the ‘Before You Read’ section. Compare these with what Anne writes in her diary. What language was the diary originally written in? In what way is Anne’s dairy different?

Anne’s diary was originally written in Dutch. Her diary is different from the others in many aspects.

  • She has a name for her diary- ‘kitty’. She would start with salutation ‘Dearest kitty’ and ended with “Yours, Anne’

  • She treated it as another person who would listen to her daily making it a lot more personal than other diaries.

Question 3:

Q. Why does Anne need to give a brief sketch about her family? Does she treat ‘Kitty’ as an insider or an outsider?

A. Anne wanted her readers to have background on where she was coming from and hence gave a brief sketch of her life and family. She treated kitty, her diary, as a member of her family and as an insider. She thought it was her best friend whom she could readily confide.
