The Himalayan Rivers

The Peninsular Rivers

They are originate from Himalayas and rise from the snow-covered mountains (glaciers) so they are perennial (never dry up).

They originate from the Deccan Plateau, and do not originate from the glaciers. So they dry up during summer.

Flow in northern plains- useful for irrigation, cultivation and navigation.

Flow on rocky surface so not useful for navigation.

Most of Himalayan Rivers are long with large volume.

Most of Peninsular Rivers are short and carry less water

Canals can be built to distribute water of these rivers for irrigation.
