Question 1. What forms of entertainment came up in nineteenth century England to provide leisure activities for the people.

Answer:

With the increasing population, relaxation need was also increased, so different entertainment activates was introduced based on upper and working classes.

  • “London Season” was sources of leisure for upper classes which was organized annually.

  • Whereas pubs and meetings were popular in working classes.
  • Libraries, art galleries and museums were come up as refreshment entertainment and also as utilization of state money.

  • New system of vacation was also introduced for industrial workers, to save their health from polluted environment and refresh them.

Question 2. Explain the social changes in London which led to the need for the Underground railway. Why was the development of the Underground criticized?

Answer:

During 1831 to 1925, London was the largest city in world and because of massive population different problems had taken place and one of them was traffic on rode. And as solution of this problem world՚s first underground metro system was established in 1863

  • This invention has solved the housing issues in London (world՚s first city whose population reached to 1 million) .
  • The first underground metro system in London was started on 10th January 1863 from Paddington and Farrington Street with 10,000 passenger capacity.
  • Initially peoples have not adopted underground system because of:
    • People felt that it was risky and afraid to travel from that.
    • Other reason was to establish path of underground train many houses had to be destroyed.
  • This all circumstances led to the displacement of a great number of London poor.
  • But ultimately this all the issues were disappear and underground become more popular and well-planned railway network provide good transportation to London population and this new technological development had lower down social distinctions.
