Here are the reasons why Nazism became popular in Germany in 1930:
Treaty of Versailles:
- After downfall in the First World War Germany was forced to sign a peace treaty at Versailles.
- This treaty was so strict and humiliating for the Germans so they were not ready to accept it by heart and eventually led to the rise of HitlerΥs Nazism in Germany.
- Germany had to sacrifice much of its territories, colonies, natural resources, military power due to the terms of this treaty and also had to pay huge war compensation.
- So during this harsh time Hitler of the Nazi Party was raised as the symbol of stimulation of the lost glories of Germany.
Economic Crises:
- In early 1920s the Nazism was not so popular.
- The world-wide economic crisis of 1929 β 1933 had affected the German economy. And the country was passing through a hyperinflation condition. This period say Nazism becoming a mass movement.
Political Turmoil:
- There were many political parties in Germany but none of them had majority in the democratic government.
- The Parties struggle amongst themselves most. With so many crisis in the country and decrease in the strength of the Republic government the Nazis got an opportunity to capture the power.
Germany had no belief in Democracy:
- βDemocracyβ was completely new for the Germans after the downfall of Germany at the end of the First World War.
- German people had lost faith in Parliamentary institutions.
- Democracy was very young and fragile idea to survive the myriad of problems of Germany and leading to its ultimate demise.
- Prestige and glory were preferred by population of Germany to liberty and freedom and they had been given. This disparity caused them support to Hitler because they thought he was able to make their dreams a relality.
Failure of Weimar Republic:
- There was devastation, starvation, unemployment and total despair in the youth and complete confusion everywhere in Germany after the downfall in the First World War and Versailles Treaty. Weimar Republic failed to survive in the economic crises of the country.
- This becomes a golden opportunity for the Nazis to launch a campaign in their favour.
HitlerΥs Personality:
- Hitler was a powerful speaker, an able organizer, resourceful person and a man of actions.
- He had ability to take the mass in his favour with his passionate words.
- He had promised to build a strong nation, revoke the injustice of the Versailles Treaty and reestablish the self-respect of the German people.
- Nazism become popular in Germany due to his strong personality and actions.
