Title: Tawa Matsya Sangh
Introduction
- A federation of Fishworker՚s cooperatives.
- It protects the rights of the displaced forest dwellers.
- The displaced forest dwellers in Madhya Pradesh՚s Satpura belong to this association.
- Whenever and wherever any dam or sanctuaries for animals are to be built there is a problem of displacement of people and communities living nearby.
- The Madhya Pradesh government in 1994 gave the rights of fishing to the private contractors in the Tawa reservoir.
- The local people were pushed by the private contractors and took on cheap labours for the jobs.
Displacement Effects
- People are forced to leave their houses and settle at other locations which disturbs their entire life.
- Moving to far areas due to forced displacement even in urban places cause accessibility issues for children going to school disturbing their overall routine.
Functioning of the TMS
- The catch from the Fishworker՚s was brought at a fair price by setting up a cooperative.
- The cooperative took the responsibility of transport arrangement and selling of the catch at the reasonable price.
- Earnings of the Fishworker՚s increased by a three-fold.
The fish-workers could also get the loans:
- Buying new nets
- Repair of nets
Impact of TMS
- A committee to assess the issue of displacement was created by the government in a response to the protests made by the TMS.
- As per the assessment done by the committee it was recommended that the villagers should be given the fishing rights for their livelihood.
- Madhya Pradesh government in 1996 decided to give rights for the reservoir to the displaced people.
