1. Our country has a very long coastline (about 6000 km) that surrounds the peninsular plateau.

2. The Coastal Plain is the narrow strip of plain which lies between the sea and the Ghats (Western Ghats and Eastern Ghats)

3. The western coastal plains are divided into three parts –

  • The Gujarat coast,

  • The Konkan coast and

  • The Malabar Coast

4. The Konkan Coast extends from Gujarat coast up to Goa. Mumbai, the biggest port in India is located in this region.

5. The Malabar Coast extends from Goa to Kanyakumari. Lagoons are found all along the coast.

6. When the sand bars in the coasts enclose water, they form lakes called lagoons.

7. These lagoons are also called backwaters. The climate of this region is hot and humid throughout the year.

8. The eastern coast stretches from the Ganga delta in the north to Kanyakumari in the south. The northern part of the eastern coastal plain is called the Northern Circars and the southern part is called the Coromandal coast.

15. Port Blair is the capital of this group of islands.

16. The Southern tip of the islands is called the Indira Point. This is the southernmost point of India.

17. The Lakshadweep islands are group of 36 coral islands in the Arabian Sea.

18. Lakshadweep stretches about 32 sq. km. It is the smallest Union territories of India.

19. Kavaratti is the capital of Lakshadweep.
