So you have world which is divided into 7 primary continents of which will discusses one by one. Asia is the biggest continents it cover nearly 1/3rd total land area that exists. Now you have India that is known as in Asia. The continents of Asia and Europe together is known as Eurasia. You have Africa this is a second largest continent by the size, then you have a special characteristic of Africa, you have line of equator, if you already talk about the degree line that passes through nearly the center of Africa and Africa is unique in since it has all three major line that pass. Through it so you have degree equator, you have tropic of cancer and tropic of Capricorn. So all this three line pass throw Africa and therefore Africa is unique continents.

Then you have Europe which is kind of smaller continent a close to the Arctic sea and it means it has kind of coastline which is indented and is suitable for fishing activities and port activities.

Again the other two important continents is North America and South America. The North America is 3rd largest continents by size. Now unique thing there are two units terms comes across will talking this one is Isthmus and you have Isthmus of Panama connect North America to South America. Now Isthmus is a small path way or passes that connects two major continents.

Now you have a South America that exists to the south of North America and is another important continent. The next important continent is Australia we also call it Oceania. Now Australia continent, is unique to itself because it is the only continent which is surrounding by water on all sides. Hence it also known as Island continent. Finally you have Antarctica which is covered with snow for most of direction. So you have other important phenomena which is snow covered Antarctica.

Now we talked about Isthmus which is a narrow path of land that connect of two major landmass. Similarly you have another narrow path of water that connect two major ocean bodies an such path is known strait. An important strait that you must be familiar with is Palk strait which connects Bay of Bengal to India Ocean and lies between India and Sri Lanka. So we understood two major terms here one is Isthmus which is a narrow strait of land connecting two major landbodies and narrow strait of water that connect major waterbodies is strait.

Now we talked about the major continents. Next important thing that look most here is ocean. When we come into oceans, there are 4 primary ocean that exists. The first is the Pacific Ocean, you have Atlantic Ocean, Indian Ocean, Arctic Ocean. Now Arctic Ocean names suggest is near to the Arctic sea, so region surrounding the Arctic sea circle would be the Arctic Ocean. Confined to the North Pole and it connects to the Pacific Ocean through another Strait which is known as Berring strait. So you have Berring strait here that exists. Now this connect Arctic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean as I said the region between America, Europe and Africa ‘S’ shaped Region is the Atlantic Ocean

Now another Important characteristic for the Pacific Ocean is along the Pacific Ocean you have ring of fire is that exists. So is the after volcanic belt I would say and belt prone to earthquake activities and so you have the Pacific ring of fire as is it is known as ring of fire.

Being the largest water bodies in the world. It has the one Important it has Important is phenomena of the wind flow region. That Atlantic Ocean possess a major characteristics here would be the shape is ‘S’ shape and most of the coast line along the Atlantic both on the west in the east is indented. As a result it is suitable for harbor, port and fishing activities. Most of parts along the Atlantic ocean are one of the busiest ports of the world. Then you have Indian Ocean that exists here, a unique phenomena about Indian Ocean is the infact the currents and monsoons. So you have Indian Ocean which is unique here.

Now we talked about the lithosphere moving on to the Atmosphere as I said the layers of Atmosphere we already covered in a separate lesson. So look at that in the following lecture. Now another important thing is composition of the atmosphere.
