3. Symbol for Menu Commands

A shortcut, we have used a special convention to indicate menu commands throughout this course. It will follow this pattern: menu name - command. For example, "Choose File g Open" is a shorter way of saying

1. Desktop:

A desktop computer is a personal computer that fits on or under a desk. They usually consist of a monitor, keyboard, mouse and either a horizontal or vertical (tower) form factor. Unlike a laptop, which is portable, a desktop computer is meant to stay at one location

  • When you turn on your computer, the screen first displays

  • Basic Input Output Information (BIOS) about your computer.

  • Windows takes control and the Windows logo flashes on your screen with the cloudy sky.

The first thing that always appears after loading is that you will be asked to type your password to enter Windows

2. Desktop Icons:

My Computer My Computer is the most important Desktop item. This is where everything is present: your hard drive, floppy, CDROM, computer's main control (Control Panel).

A section of Microsoft Windows first found in Windows 95 and included with all later versions that allows you to explore and manage the contents of your computer drives.

All the computer resources can be accessed from My Computer - it is the gateway to your computer. To access My Computer, double-click on its icon in the Desktop.

To learn more about each item, just choose one icon, right-click and select Properties from menu.

Properties window is divided into four tabs: General, Tools, Sharing, and Compression.

If you select the Floppy icon, the General tab shows information about your floppy, storage device.

It tells you how much space you still have on your disc, and the total size in KB or MB.
