Drainage Systems in India
- It refers to the system of flow of surface water mainly through rivers.
- It affected by a number of factors like a slope of the land, geological structure, amount and velocity of the water.
- The helps in excess water removal from a particular area, transportation of sediments from one place to other, providing a natural source for irrigation and maintaining the water table.
The Himalayan Drainage System
- The Indus River System consist of Jhelum, Ravi, Beas and Satluj
- The Ganga Rivers System consist Yamuna, Ramganga, Ghaghara, Gomti, Gandak and Kosi etc.
- The Brahmaputra River System consist Dibang, Lohit, Tista and Meghna.
- Most of them are perennial. They receive water from the snowy glacier.
The Peninsular Drainage
- Mahanadi, Godavari, Krishna and Kaveri are the major peninsular rivers in India.
- They are good for hydropower projects because they form rapids & waterfalls.
- Most of the rivers flow eastwards and enters into Bay of Bengal except Narmada and Tapi rivers which flow westwards of the Western Ghats.
