Uses

  • It is used in the manufacture of sulphuric acid.
  • It is used in in the refining of sugar and kerosene oil.
  • It is used in fumigation and in preserving fruits since it has antiseptic properties.
  • It is used as a refrigerant in the liquid state.
  • It is used for bleaching delicate articles such as wool, silk and straw.
  • It is used in the preparation of sodium and calcium bisulphites which are used in paper industry.
  • It is used as an antichlor in removing excess chlorine from bleached materials.

Sulphuric Acid

Manufacture

The two main processes used for the manufacture of sulphuric acid are:

  • Lead Chamber process
  • The Contact process

Steps involves in manufacture of sulphuric acid by Contact Process:

Sulphur dioxide gas is produced by burning Sulphur in air or by roasting of pyrites.

Sulphur dioxide produced is then freed from dust and other impurities such as arsenic compounds.

The purified Sulphur dioxide in then oxidized by atmospheric oxygen to sulphur trioxide in the presence of a catalyst, vanadium (V) oxide, heated to .

The Sulphur trioxide gas in then absorbed in conc. H2SO4 to form oleum .

Oleum is then diluted with water to obtain sulphuric acid of desired strength.

Properties of Sulphuric Acid

Physical Properties

  • Pure sulphuric acid is a thick colourless oily liquid.
  • Its melting point is .
  • Concentrated sulphuric acid dissolves in water with the liberation of large amount of heat.

Chemical Properties

Oxidizing Properties

Hot concentrated sulphuric acid acts as an oxidizing agent and oxidizes metals, non-metals and compounds.

Oxidation of metals

Oxidation of non-metals

Oxidation of compounds

Dehydrating properties

Conc. H2SO4 is a strong dehydrating agent . It removes water of crystallization from copper sulphate and turn it to white colour.

Uses of Sulphuric Acid

It is used in the manufacture of fertilizers, paints and pigments, detergents, plastics and fibres, etc.
