Formation of BeCL2

  • Boron has five electrons and its electronic configuration is 1 s2, 2 s2, 2 p1.
  • There are three electrons in the valence shell of boron atom.
  • In order to form bonds with three chlorine atoms one of the electrons from the 2-s orbital of boron atom is excited to its 2-p orbital.
  • One 2-s orbital and two 2-p orbitals hybridize to give three sp2 hybridized orbitals. This is called sp2 hybridization.
  • The three hybridized orbitals are coplanar and directed towards the corners of an equilateral triangle.
  • These hybrid orbitals then form bonds with the p – orbitals of chlorine atoms as shown in figure below:
