Section 24.1 Summary of Seen or Unseen Passage- ‘Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking’

  • 26th June is celebrated as International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking every year, on this occasion in 2005 the Secretary General of UN addressed his country with message and appreciated effort of people that they choose healthy living and stop using drug.
  • Further he said that by stop using drug, all people who use or might be tempted to use drugs will get positive message: ‘Value yourself … make healthy choices.’
  • On this occasion he also highlights the problem that around 200 million people are still consuming illegal drugs.
  • He added that colorful or enticing name of such drugs for example crack, pot, junk, crystal meth, and disco biscuits are little more than tickets to a dead end.
  • Treatment is a way out for those who are addicted to this kind of drugs, and the choice to seek treatment is not only courageous, but often lifesaving.
  • Those who are addicted to any kind of drug should have to learn from those who are not consuming it or have maintain safe distant from this.
  • Making healthy choices means you are adopting a positive attitude for your body and mind for example, participation in sports to improve health and well-being, teach the value of teamwork and discipline, and build self-confidence.

Section 24.2 Summary of Seen or Unseen Passage- ‘How to Treat Drug Addiction’

Drug addiction is a treatable disorder.

  • Treatment is different for everyone based on Individual needs, and by leaving addiction patients can leave live normal and productive lives.
  • A person who is on medication can be live as normal as people who have diabetes or heart disease and taking their treatment.

Behavioural therapies can include psychotherapy, psychotherapy, support groups, or family therapy.

  • This treatment helps to suppressing the withdrawal condition and drug craving and in blocking the effects of drugs,
  • Acording to studies methadone at an adequate dosage level combined with therapy as treatment for heroin addiction have reduces death rates and many health problems associated with heroin abuse.

The more treatment given, the better the results.

  • Many patients require other services as well, such as medical and mental health services and HIV prevention services.
  • Patients who are on treatment from long time will have better outcomes than those who stay less time.
  • Patients who go through medically assisted involvements with less discomfort but do not receive any further treatment, are as similar as to those who were never treated.
  • Last 25-year studies shows that treatment works to reduce drugs and crimes which are done by drug-dependent people.
  • It is also proven that after getting better treatment a person gets better option for jobs.

The main aim of all the treatment is to make the patient capable to achieve lasting abstinence, but the immediate goals are to reduce drug use, improve the patient՚s ability to function, and reduce the medical and social curse of drug abuse.

There are several types of drug abuse treatment programmes.

  • Short-term methods: which normally of less than 6 months such as residential therapy, medication therapy, and drug-free outpatient therapy
  • Longer term methods: which include methadone maintenance outpatient treatment for opiate addicts and residential therapeutic communication treatment.
