Art of Indus Valley Civilization: Introduction and Seal with Bull Design

Introduction

  • At the site of Harappa near Sindh province the first discoveries of Indus valley civilization were made. Indus valley civilization is also called Harappa civilization. Later exhuming demonstrates that civilization had far augmentation to Mohenjo-Daro and different urban communities. Lot of art and crafts have been discovered. Which include toys, seals, Jewellery, pottery and tools.
  • Between 2500B. C to 1750 B. C there was a belief among scholars in civilization which has flourished in this period. By selecting four art works for the lessons an attempt will be made to impart knowledge about the arts and crafts.

As a symbol of power and strength the seal is made of steatite and has an elaborate intaglio design of bull by exaggerating the size of the hump and the horns has been achieved. The askew directs them to the neck to express the energetic vitality of the creature. On the upper part of the seat there is some writing.

This jar is made on a potter wheel with earth. The pressure of the crafty fingers of the potter was manipulated by shape. The jar was painted with black colour, after baking the clay model. The themes are of vegetal and geometric form. With a tendency towards abstraction with design are simple.

As per the terracotta process this statue is made of clay and then baked in fire one of the finest terra cotta is this figurine. To achieve an unblemished red colour the baking is perfectly done. It was identified as “mother goddess” by some scholars. On both sides of the head the headgear of this statue, interestingly, comprises two small-bowl like structures which are formed. In the middle of the hand these are again balanced by another form which is supposed to be an elaborate hairstyle. The figure was wearing a broad belt to hold it in place.

At Indus valley sites in great abundance the jewellery was found. Lot of gold, silver or jade necklace, earring, pendant, belt, and bangles were the found things. The excellent example of craftsmanship and designing was the jade necklace. With 30 round beads and six oval beads the jade jewellery was made. The beauty was enhanced because of the three lockets in the middle part of the necklace.
