Psychology: Adolescence: Developmental Tasks During Adolescence

Adolescence is one of the most important stage in the life span of human being. It is that phase when there is rapid change that take place in physically and psychologically.

What is Adolescence?

The adolescence is one of the significant stages of development in human being which helps in transition from childhood to adulthood. It starts from twelve years of age and continue through 18 years of age.

Physical Changes During the Adolescence

Increase in height and weight takes place as a result of redistribution of fat deposits. Growth spurts takes place in boys later than the girls but for a longer period. In girls hips gets broadened and in boys shoulder gets broadened. There are major changes in body due to changes in amount of hormones secreted by endocrine glands. Both the genders develop sex characteristics. Sex characteristics is of two types- primary and secondary. Primary sex characteristics in boys include growth of male sex organs and in females growth of female sex organs like uterus, fallopian tube. There are secondary sex characteristics. Secondary sex characteristics include development of breasts in female and beard in males.

Developmental Tasks During Adolescence

The main developmental tasks for adolescent are

  • Accepting one physical self
  • Achieving new and more mature relationship with agemates
  • Achieving social roles
  • Achieving emotional independence from parents
  • Desiring and achieving socially responsible behavior.

Psychological Characteristics of Adolescents

  • Emotional development: Mood swings are very common. Sex related emotional experiences like crushes and infatuation also begin to surface during this period.
  • Social development: Adolescents undergo lot of changes in their interpersonal relationships and begin to understand society and its diverse influences.
  • Cognitive development: According to Piaget, adolescent enter the stage of formal operations. They develop the capacity to think both inductively and deductively.
  • Moral development: Adolescent develop a firm ethical sense or an understanding what is right or wrong.

Adjustment and Coping with Adolescent Problems

The problem related to body and self are body images, pimples, complexion and body changes. The problems related to family are authoritative principles, lack of communication, low socio-economic background. The problems related to schools are strict teachers, closed school and approval from classmate. The problem related to society are gender bias, generation gap and orthodox practices.
